First sign may be fatal

Cholesterol Symptoms
High cholesterol levels do not cause any symptoms. The first sign you may notice is usually from the development of a major, potentially fatal condition such as atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. This is why it is so important to keep a check on your cholesterol levels, even if you are in good health.Conditions such as cardiovascular disease take many years to build up. In this time cholesterol and fat builds up in your artery walls. Your arteries become narrowed and harden and blood has difficulty travelling through to the heart, muscles and other vital organs.

Diseases that may result from too much ‘bad’ cholesterol include:

* Angina, from narrowed arteries in the heart, which may lead to heart failure if your heart muscle is significantly damaged.
* Stroke, where carotid or cerebral arteries in your brain may block, or a haemorrhage may occur from a smaller vessel. Arteries in your neck can also narrow and allow clots to form which then float into the brain causing a stroke.
* Atherosclerosis, causing leg and other extremity pain from the arteries that supply blood to your limbs. In chronic atherosclerosis this can lead to total blood starvation.
