Senior Golf: A Great Way for Seniors to Get Fit

Senior Golf

Senior golf is a great way for seniors to get up, get moving, and get some beneficial exercise. It poses less risk of injury, and for many people, is more enjoyable. Many people think of exercise as something that’s tough on your body and gets you sweating. For many seniors, this kind of exercise is unsafe and perhaps even impossible.

Senior golf improves strength and balance. Perfecting your golf swing requires you to have strength and adequate muscle mass. Golfing regularly can help you keep your muscle mass from decreasing as you age. This will help you stay strong and get through a normal day more easily. A good golf swing also requires you to remain stable and balanced; this builds your core muscles. By remaining stable during your golf swing, you build the muscles that help you stay balanced in everyday activities. This means you’re less likely to suffer an injury from an accidental fall.

A good golf swing requires you to extend your muscles through a full range of motion; improving flexibility. Keeping your body flexible keeps you from losing the ability to perform certain actions, like walking up the stairs. By keeping yourself limber, you’re helping to maintain or even improve you current quality of life.

If you choose to walk instead of using a golf cart, then golf is a fantastic way to get a workout and build stamina at the same time. Any sort of walking program, whether it’s on the golf course or around your neighborhood, is a great workout, especially for seniors. It may be difficult to make it the whole way in the beginning, but the more you do it, the easier it will be.

One of the best tips anyone will give you for sticking with a fitness program is to have a workout buddy. With golf, you already have that safety net built in. You generally golf with more than one person. Those people can keep you from getting bored, and motivate you to keep stick with golfing, even if you don’t really want to sometimes.

In addition to being great exercise itself, golf is a great incentive to do other beneficial exercises. Many people just accept that as they get older, they’ll become worse at golf (and other sports). If you maintain a good fitness program in addition to golf, your game should remain the same and can even improve. Knowing you’ll get lower scores could be all the motivation you need to start regular cardiovascular, flexibility, or strength training exercises.

As with any fitness program, you should consult your doctor before regularly golfing. This can help you avoid any undue injury. After that, grab your clubs and have fun during your senior golf workout.
