Super Supplements

High quality super supplements improve senior health and slow aging. If you're older than 55, you can still benefit from what nutritional supplements offer. You may not begin to see the effects for six months to a year. That does not mean that you should wait to begin taking supplements. It's increasingly important to get the nutrients your body needs as you age both through diet and supplements, says Dr. John Bogden, professor of preventive medicine and community health at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark.

You need to eat low calorie, but also low risk. It's a fine line – too many calories and you run increased risks of heart disease, strokes and cancer. Too few calories and you can have nutritional deficiencies. This is especially true if you are not eating the right foods, explains Dr. Bogden.

Dietitians at Utah State University tried to create balanced diets of less than 2,200 calories, close to the number of calories you take in. They found it nearly impossible to do that and meet the recommended daily amount of important vitamins and minerals.

Super supplements can boost immune function, which helps to fight degenerative diseases. "Older people who take vitamin and mineral supplements have stronger immune systems," says Dr. Bogden. "Generally, the immune system starts to decline around age 50 and may already be compromised by age 60." If your immune system can't protect you, the door is wide open for degenerative diseases.

But it doesn't have to be this way...

Super supplements can provide better senior health and longer life. However, immune function does not necessarily have to decline as you age. An Italian study looked at healthy centenarians and found that they had one thing in common – extremely healthy immune systems. "That's probably why these people got to be 100-plus. Their immune systems never deteriorated" says Dr. Bogden. What are the biggest factors in the physical process of aging?

You can avoid the slowing down of your body's systems – as you age, many of your organs work less efficiently. Getting the right supplements help your body to maintain peak function. When you get older, you lose some of the stomach acids which help you get the maximum amount of nutrients from your food. You end up losing out on as much as 40% of the nutrients from your food. Your nutrient storage is also affected; Dr. Sharon Miller, Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences at Northern Illinois University explains that this is due to the increasing percentage of body fat as you get older.

High quality super supplements stop harmful oxidants. You can counteract the harmful effects of your metabolism. "The body's metabolism keeps you alive and healthy, but it also produces harmful by-products. It's very much like the fire that gives you warmth along with the unpleasant smoke," says Richard Cutler, Ph.D., president, chief executive officer, and scientific research director at Genox in Baltimore, which specializes in antioxidant research.

The by products of your metabolism include free radicals and other substances which can damage cellular DNA and is responsible for many of the effects of the aging process. To combat these compounds, your body also produces antioxidant compounds. However, the levels of antioxidants produced by the body drops as you get older, most likely because of the natural slowdown of your metabolism as you age.

As you age, it gets increasingly difficult to get the antioxidants you need from your diet, says Dr. Cutler.

The Must-Have Micronutrients For Senior Health

Many researchers believe that nutritional deficiencies contribute to strokes, heart disease, cancer and degenerative diseases. These experts also think that the best protection from these health hazards is to get quality nutritional supplements. Enabling one to slow the aging process.

"Some studies suggest that specific vitamin and mineral supplements can help reduce your risk of heart disease by up to 30 to 40 percent and even slow the disease's progress," says Jeffrey Blumberg, M.D., associate director and chief of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging.

The answer is as simple as getting the right, high quality nutritional supplements. They're affordable and can do a lot in slowing the aging process and degenerative diseases.

While super supplements can strengthen immune function, they do not work miracles. "While supplements are cheap, easy to take, and in most cases beneficial, they're not magic bullets," says Dr. Blumberg. "They're supplements, not substitutes for healthy eating."

That is to say that you cannot continue to eat an unhealthy, high fat diet then take supplements and just assume that everything will turn out for the best. Studies show that as many as one third of older people do not get enough nutrients through their diet alone.

The secret to slowing down the process of aging is to slow down or repair the cellular damage being done to you on a cellular level. When you improve the health of your cells, you make sure that your new cells are as healthy as possible. As this repeats again and again, you will steadily improve your health.
